Wednesday June 5th 2013, facebook messenger …
The above is why Amar is a mate, but also someone I current loath through jealousy. Chatting away on facebook messenger this past week he describes his current paradise of choice and casually adds that he has the use of a number of surf boards at no cost. The swine!
This interview has been a long time coming to be fair. I first sent these interview questions to Amar back in June of last year (2012), some 12 months ago. Still its understandable why its taken a while, Amar has a gap year related empire to mastermind and run, but I’ll let him tell you all about that …
HI, AND WHO MIGHT YOU BE?
2. Age? 26
3. Twitter Handle? @GapYearEscape
4. URL? GapYearEscape.com
5. Home Town? Warwick, England
6. Current Location? Homeless
7. Current location, is that for business or pleasure? My business is my pleasure.
8. Can you tell us a little bit about what you’re up to at the moment please? Your average day, best bits, worst bits etc
I’m currently travelling from Vancouver to Antarctica overland, taking in around 20 countries. This time I’m travelling with a friend from B School.
LETS TALK TRAVEL
9. First travel experience?
I was 3 and went to Pakistan for my birthday and had a golden suit. It was pretty baller. However, my first hardcore solo trip was in 2009. The first day of my Gap Year was enlightening! It’s a year of travel. Not everything runs smoothly, not everything goes to plan either. It all just becomes part of the journey.
10. Future travel plans?
I’m currently in the jungle in Honduras about to do some white water rafting. After that I head to Nicaragua and onto Costa Rica where I’ll stay for a while. Preferably by the ocean in a surf town.
11. If you could go anywhere tomorrow where would it be and why?
Nowhere comes to mind and I think that’s because I’m on the journey that I want to be on right now. I wouldn’t trade this place for another right now because in this moment I am happy. I’m happy here in Honduras. I’ll be just as happy in Nicaragua next week, Costa Rica in June and Antarctica for Christmas.
12. If you could avoid going anywhere tomorrow where would it be and why?
Easy. Back to the UK! I remember the massive come down I was on after my last Gap Year so this time I’ll make sure I don’t head back unless I have to!
13. What 5 items would you not go travelling without?
-My Berghaus Jalan. I’ve owned one for over three and a half years now. It’s been on every trip with me and I think it’s got to the stage where it needs a name. Any ideas?
-My GoPro HD Hero 3 to capture all the adventure stuff I do.
-My IPad for all those long assed chicken bus journeys.
-Travel Insurance – It’s boring and practical but you really do need it.
-My passport, obviously!
14. Best bit of advice you’ve received?
Everything is perfect and there is lots to do.
It’s more of a statement than a piece of advice but not one people fully understand. We get caught up with past hindrances and future duties. Just be in the moment. If you see a beautiful sunset. Look at the colours. Don’t think about taking a picture to put it on instagram. Just be.
“[Insert Country] is really dangerous”
I’ve got as much chance of being stabbed in London as I do anywhere else in the world. The world is a dangerous place but people harbour fears about exotic locations. Unless the British government says do not go, then I’m going!
16. Best bit of advice you can give readers of this piece?
Just go! If you spend time day dreaming about foreign landscapes, ancient ruins, beach parties or jumping out of a plane, go and do it. Start requesting that time or start saving for that trip you’ve always dreamed of. There’s never a “right” time to travel so get cracking!
17. Favourite ice cream flavour? Ben & Jerry’s Pfish Food
18. Apple or Andriod? Apple
19. Blogger or WordPress? WordPress
20. Hostel or hotel? Hostel
21. Guilty pleasure? M&M’s
22. Your chosen super-power? The ability to fly
23. Airplane seat – isle, centre or window? Window, always window.
24. What song/album are you listening to right now? 2pac – Thugz Mansion
[warning – I image this video probably contains swearing or something]
Something a little different to end with this week
No Q25 this week as Amar didn’t fancy answering it, instead I have decided to feature one for his latest youtube videos which involves a cute dog … oh and there’s something about travel in there somewhere too.
