Its safe to say that our stay in Luang Prabang didn’t get off to the best of starts. Fresh off the bus from Vang Vieng, we were almost immediately introduced to Songkran as a huge gush of water flew into our tuk tuk and destroyed our map. We then contrived to walk 2km in the wrong direction in search of our hotel, Villa Merry Lao III, as a result. Not happy.
However, once we’d managed to find our way to our place of stay for the next four nights thanks to a very kind local with incredible English, we were delighted to find the Villa Merry Lao III Hotel an almost perfect base in the heart of what became my favourite place in Laos.
Location of Villa Merry Lao III
We originally thought that being located so close to a number of bars might be an issue, but the 11pm curfew enforced within Luang Prabang actually made our location ideal. As of 11pm it was quiet enough to get a decent nights sleep, and of course we didn’t have far to walk home from a night out, just a few steps. Whilst open, offering 10,000 kip beers and blaring loud music, the bars surrounding the hotel offered ideal locations from which to get in the new years spirit and soak people, much like this …
Thinking back, there was very little was all that far from the hotel. We were able to walk to all the major attractions within central Luang Prabang, this included the summit of Mt Phousi the Royal Palace, the night market, morning market, and our beloved Johma cafe.
When it came to leaving (sad face) we were also only a 10 min tuk tuk ride to the airport, and if leaving in the early hours of the morning, the hotel would arrange a pick up for you.
Inside our room we were pleased/relieved to find A/C, fresh towels, a fridge full of cold water, a TV with a movie channel (:D) and of course a big old double bed. We also had that much craved travel blogger essential – fast (ish) Wifi.
We were situated in a room adjoining the main reception area, but noise was never an issue. In terms of safety we had a night porter sleep almost directly outside of our room each night and of course we had a lock on our door.
Room for improvement?
One small thing that could be supplied to guests is a free map of the area. Also the map on the hotels web site could do with updating. Printed out the white marker that points to the hotel can (and was) be misinterpreted as a smudge/stain.
If with a partner, mate, or willing to pay for a double room to yourself this might just be an ideal spot. Inexpensive, but located brilliantly within Luang Prabang the Villa Merry Lao III provided everything Esther and I needed during our stay. Although not located in the typical backpacker part of town, it is located next to all the bars backpacker drink in. Aside from gulping down 10,000 kip beers, everywhere we wanted to visit within town was walkable, and when it got too hot our room was cool enough to crash out in for a while and watch a movie. A chill atmosphere and with friendly staff, its safe to say we enjoyed our stay here. Would I stay here again? Yes totally!
Rates at the Villa Merry Lao III Hotel start from just £14 per night for a basic double room single room and £18 for a superior double room. Visit Hostelbookers.com for more information and to book.
