Blink and we might have missed it, but blink we did not and lurking between two restaurants showing endless re-runs of Friends we found the Chaleun Garden Guesthouse, a budget travelers dream.

Staying at Chaleun Garden

Basic but not without a small amount of charm, the Chaleun Garden Guesthouse was to be our base for 3 fun packed nights in Vang Vieng.  Fresh off the bus from Vientaine, at first we were a little taken a’ back by the lack of air conditioning in the room, but once showered and caught up on sleep we come to quite like the guesthouse.  It was quiet, not only due to the time of the year (low season), but also because despite being located in the town centre, it was set back from the main road – as shown in the photo above.

Room for improvement?

There was only one difficultly we had with the guesthouse, and that was on the morning we went hot air ballooning  there was no one around to open the front gate for us.  In the end we just awkwardly jumped the gate so no biggie, but still worth mentioning.  So if you plan of taking a sunrise activity of some sort, it might be worth letting Jeremy know in advance.  Maybe he can arrange the gate to be opened earlier for you.

Conclusion

So long as you’re not expecting all sorts of luxury this is one tidy place to stay.  The location is excellent and the owner (Jeremy) very helpful and informative about the area.  £6 a night well spent.
