Transport from London airports, surely you just get a cab dont you?  Straight from the terminal to your cosy hotel, hostel or appartment.  Oh I wish it was that simple!  Whilst London has an abundance of airports for the most part the ‘London’ part is a little white lie, the majority arent really inside the m25.  Take a look at the map below if you dont believe me.  If you’re visiting London chances are you’ll be staying fairly centrally, propably within that little red diamond area.  Now look at where the ‘London’ airports are (red pins) … not particuarly close are they!?

Anyway, the point of this post is not to have a rant, but to tell you about your options, how exactly you can get from the different airports into central London. Now obviously you could just take a taxi, but thats going to cost you a small fortune. Instead please find below the different train and coach options available to you.

Nice practical advice. I’ll be checking this out again in future! I always use the Easy Bus if I can. It’s such a bargain!

Hey Neil, I think you missed a valuable train journey for Luton. The First Capital Connect service (used to be called Thameslink) runs from Kings Cross St. Pancreas to Luton (after which you get a free shuttle to Luton Airport. I think Kings Cross to Luton is about 40 mins and the shuttle is 10 mins. Anytime open return is £25.

Once the work on the line is fixed, you should be able to get this from anywhere on the line, i.e. London Bridge, Farringdon, etc.

@Ari – yeah agreed, the easybus is pretty decent! Thanks for the comment.

  5. Neil

@Tom – yep, take you pick. But sometimes the cheapest flight doesnt always work out the cheapest when you have to factor in transfers. Worth researching! Thanks for commenting.

  6. Neil

@Counterintutive – Great spot thanks, I was not aware of that one and thats a very good price for a return tickets! Thanks commenting and helping with the info.

I’ve recently started looking at the cost of flying with smaller airlines from London City Airport to smaller European destinations like Antwerp. You’ll often find that they really aren’t thaaaat much more expensive, especially when you factor in the extra cost of travel to and from the hub airports (both departure and arrival ones). Plus you will regularly discover that there are NO checked baggage fees with some of these airlines so if you did have to travel with a hold bag then it’s more than worth looking at City too.

@Chris – Yep good spot, I’ve stater having a look at city airport too. Always got the feeling when I was younger that city was almost exclusively for business peeps and therefore muchos expensive, so didnt really consider it an option. Silly I know. Thanks for commenting!

I’m really really lucky in that my parents only live an hour or two from Heathrow so anytime I’ve been back in England (errr….not much lately really…) they’ve always come and picked me up. But, if I’m ever stuck I’m definitely keeping this, really helpful! :-)

Very informative post. For Heathrow I always took the tube except for one horrific time when I was actually catching a flight as opposed to picking people up from the airport and the Piccadilly line totally seized up, so it was a last minute dash for a cab. For any other airport I always took the EasyBus, the prices were usually excellent if you booked ahead and the vans were always super clean.

  14. Neil

@Kelly – Yeah the easybus is pretty good, and if you miss yours they let you get the next one (if there’s room) at no extra cost :)
